Why Gamification Works

Does your company use gamification as part of its training and development processes? If not, it may be losing out because gamification applies the elements and mechanics as used in gaming but in a nongaming manner.


Confused? It simply increases content within your training program in a highly visual and memorable way. So, when it is added into any learning resource, it increases the potential to hold attention in a very powerful way. This emerged as a trend initially, but gamification looks as if it is here to stay. But do you really need it?
It is essential to clarify whether any existing training program is working. Content may be too dull, too long-winded, or unnecessary. If there is too much information given at any one time, employees may be unable to absorb the details in a way that makes sense. By adding humor or visual aspects, this could improve attention and memory.
Certainly, gamification plays a vital role when it comes to engagement. So, in the first instance, the business must look at learners’ behavior and determine if any changes are necessary. Once this is complete, multidirectional training strategies can be implemented to address any issues when it comes to motivation.
When employees make common errors, there are two main reasons for this: Training may overlook these potential issues, or the training provided is simply ineffective and unmemorable. When you create memorable training, it is easier for these messages to be simulated and absorbed until they become second nature. Therefore, gamification could make a big difference in creating learner buy-in. As much as any business owner would like to think that their employees are engaged and willing to develop their skills, sometimes employees simply do not like traditional training methods. So, this is another reason why by implementing enjoyable training resources, employees can start to embrace learning sessions and benefit from them, and retention automatically improves.
Many businesses have theory-based training, and this does not absorb as well as other methods available.  Information must be utilized immediately if the employee is going to remember the content. The way gamification works is that it can be used in very real situations, in particular, those that would occur on a day-to-day basis. Consider how in a gaming environment, learners would have to resolve issues or problem solve while under pressure. There is no doubt that learners connect well with this style of training.
