Using Tech to Enhance Peer-to-Peer Learning

In yesterday’s Advisor, Turning Technologies Cofounder and CEO Mike Broderick shared the first two of three ways that corporate trainers are effectively tailoring their training to an increasingly tech-savvy workforce; today, we present his third strategy.

A leading innovator with over 20 years in the group response industry, Broderick is a recipient of the prestigious Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award and was inducted into the Northeast Ohio Business Hall of Fame as the first winner of the “Entrepreneurial Spirit Award.”
Using technology to implement peer-to-peer learning strategies. One of the most effective ways to ensure that students understand and retain learning material is by using “peer instruction,” an interactive learning strategy pioneered by Harvard Professor Eric Mazur. With peer instruction, students collaborate to solve problems using their collective knowledge to find answers.
Instructors can harness the power of peer-to-peer learning by using response technology to provide questions and tally group answers, facilitating lively discussions, and giving students the opportunity to work together. By allowing students to use their collective knowledge to solve problems, instructors can ensure higher levels of engagement and retention.
Employees today are more technology-focused than previous generations, and instructors who want to improve engagement with this group should implement interactive teaching strategies. Gamification is an excellent way to capture students’ attention and keep them focused on learning material throughout the session, and with the right software, instructors can embed questions for use in quiz show-style formats, making the training session fun and exciting for all participants.
