How Videos Help Training

Hilton Garden Inn (www.hgi.com) has found out just how effective training videos can be. The hotel brand teamed up with Root, Inc. (www.rootinc.com) to create compelling internal training videos to support company initiatives. Two of their videos recently were named winners in the 34th annual Telly Awards.

Hilton Garden Inn’s “You Can Count on Us Skills & Service” video was recognized as a bronze award winner in the “Film/Video: Training for Corporate Use” category. The video was created to announce the rollout of Hilton Garden Inn’s new culture-focused “You Can Count on Us” platform, which the company said “is dedicated to nourishing and nurturing communities on their road to success, every day and in times of pressing need.”

Another Hilton Garden Inn internal training video also received a bronze award in the Telly Awards competition in the same category. Launched as part of a blended learning program, this video focuses on educating team members globally about the company’s new lobby design, which is called “Project Grow.”

“Project Grow is transforming the brand’s current lobby spaces into more interactive extensions of the guest room and is intended to enhance the way its hotel team members engage with guests,” Hilton Garden Inn stated. “The video not only takes the viewer on a vivid tour of the lobby design, but also highlights guest and team member testimonials about how to best utilize the space as well as in-depth training on specific actions that will help bring Project Grow to life at each property.”

The Project Grow Learning Program was first piloted at two Hilton Garden Inn hotels, one each in New Jersey and Illinois, before the global rollout began. In addition to the video, the program includes a coffee-table-style book on the importance of Project Grow and changes in the brand’s service standard, a hotel tour of the redesigned areas (or areas soon to be redesigned), and team member checklists, according to the company.

“At Hilton Garden Inn, team member engagement is vital to rolling out a successful new program within our vast network of over 570 properties globally,” said Adrian Kurre, global head of Hilton Garden Inn. “We know that adding a creative, visual element to our training programs is the best way to engage our teams. These two informative and relevant videos deliver great results by reinforcing the key messages we want our team to understand, internalize, and advocate.”

Hilton Garden Inn and Root also received accolades in the 2013 Brandon Hall Group Excellence in Learning Awards when the Hilton Garden Inn Grassroots Sales Training Program won a bronze award in the “Best Team Effectiveness Program” category. According to Hilton Garden Inn, the goals of the program are to grow profitability and guest loyalty and to increase brand growth. Among other things, program participants conduct mock hotel tours, go on sales calls with the director of sales, and experience the hotel amenities as a guest would.

Mike Cooke, chief executive officer of Brandon Hall Group, Inc., praised the companies that entered the 19th annual awards competition. “Year after year, we are amazed at the submissions that are placed before our judging panel,” he said. “In another record-breaking year for our awards program, we are proud to recognize organizations that are focused on developing and implementing world-class initiatives that show exemplary business performance and focus on best practices.”
