Utilities Company Creates Programs to Fuel Leadership Pipeline

Those challenges included recognition that a large percentage of industry leaders would be retiring within a few years, and that regulatory and infrastructure requirements were changing rapidly, reports Korn/Ferry International (www.kornferry.com), a provider of talent management solutions.

In partnership with Korn/Ferry, OGE (www.oge.com) developed the Coaching for Effectiveness and Foundations of Leadership programs. Offered to high-potential leaders in an intensive 2-year leadership development process, the programs provide participants with opportunities to acquire new leadership skills and practice them in job-specific situations, Korn/Ferry states.

“The right leadership has a lot to do with realizing our vision to be a leader in developing members,” OGE chairman and CEO Pete Delaney said, referring to OGE’s employees. “This program is another investment that should benefit all of our members.”

“These learning initiatives were designed to incorporate OGE’s core values and vision for the future of the firm, and focus on preparing emerging leaders to perform well on the job in their roles as leaders of people, as well as managers of a utility service,” Korn/Ferry explains. The programs leverage “OGE’s approach to talent and company culture” and stress “the importance of learning transfer to participants’ daily leadership challenges and to OGE’s business strategy.”

OGE’s Pete Hammett was recognized for his role in the creation and implementation of the Coaching for Effectiveness and Foundations of Leadership programs last fall when he won Chief Learning Officer (CLO) magazine’s Learning In Practice, Gold Vanguard award.

Other Award Recipients

Hammett was among 57 honorees recognized by CLO last fall with a Learning In Practice Award. Another recipient was John McDonough, director of National Sales at OppenheimerFunds, Inc. (www.oppenheimerfunds.com), who was awarded the Gold Leadership award for successfully leading the development of The CEO Solution. That proprietary program teaches OppenheimerFunds’ salespeople how to use analytical and creative thinking to dramatically deepen client relationships.

“OppenheimerFunds is committed to providing value-add programs to help advisors navigate increasingly complex and globalized markets,” McDonough said. “We’re honored to be recognized for our innovative CEO Solution platform that combines unique methods of experiential learning to help our sales force leverage whole-brain thinking and elevate our service to advisors.”

While many of the Learning In Practice awards went to individuals, learning teams also were recognized. For example, Sidley Austin, LLP’s Lawyer Training and Professional Development team (www.sidley.com) won a Bronze award in Division II, which includes organizations with fewer than 10,000 employees.

“We are honored to win CLO’s Bronze Learning In Practice Award and gratified to be the only law firm recognized among all the Learning In Practice Award winners,” said Kathy M. Morris, chief training and development officer for Sidley.

“Sidley has a longstanding commitment to the training and development of its lawyers and to fostering an environment where shared education is paramount,” said Teresa Wilton Harmon, a partner and co-chair of Sidley’s Training and Professional Development Committee.

“The Learning In Practice Awards were established to recognize transformational and visionary leaders in enterprise education,” said Norm Kamikow, president and editor-in-chief of CLO. “More than 250 executives get nominated by their peers in more than 20 categories. The winners are the industry leaders who truly champion innovation and transform it into learning and value for their organizations.”
